ABB Relion RED615 Line Differential Protection Relay

RED615
ABBProtection Relay

When fast and selective protection of MV cable or overhead line sections is required — especially where distance protection is not applicable or where high-speed tripping is critical — the RED615 is what we specify. It provides current differential protection for two-terminal lines with Ethernet-based peer-to-peer communication using IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging.

About this product

The RED615 is ABB's dedicated current differential protection relay for two-terminal MV cable and overhead line sections. It implements ANSI 87L line differential protection using IEC 61850 GOOSE peer-to-peer communication over Ethernet, delivering sub-30ms trip times without requiring dedicated pilot cables beyond the standard substation Ethernet network. This makes it the preferred choice for cable ring networks, tie-feeders and inter-bus connections where distance protection cannot be applied due to line length, topology or cable impedance characteristics. Beyond differential protection, the RED615 provides a comprehensive suite of backup functions including time-overcurrent (50/51), earth fault (50N/51N), directional earth fault (67N), auto-reclose (79), under/overvoltage (27/59), frequency (81) and breaker failure (50BF). The relay is available in an E variant for standard IEC markets and a G variant carrying UL and CE certifications for global market approvals. All configuration, parameter setting and disturbance record analysis is performed via ABB's PCM600 engineering tool, which provides a consistent workflow across the entire Relion family. The relay supports both IEC 61850 Edition 1 and Edition 2 for integration into modern substation automation systems and produces timestamped event logs and disturbance recordings for post-fault analysis and protection coordination verification.
