The Schneider Electric Sepam B Series provides dedicated MV busbar and capacitor bank protection for medium voltage switching stations, substations and industrial power systems. The series addresses three distinct protection applications: models B21 and B22 cover single busbar voltage and frequency protection for incomer and bus coupler applications; model B80 provides the same functions for dual busbar arrangements where separate voltage measurement on both bus sections is required; and model B83 provides capacitor bank protection including overcurrent and unbalance detection for MV capacitor banks used for reactive power compensation. All models communicate via RS485 using IEC 60870-5-103 or Modbus RTU protocols for SCADA integration. The ROCOF (Rate of Change of Frequency) function on B22 and B80 provides loss-of-mains detection for generators or embedded generation connected to the protected bus section — an increasingly important function as distributed generation penetration increases in industrial and utility networks. Typical applications include DSO distribution substation busbar protection for voltage and frequency monitoring and ROCOF disconnection, industrial facilities with MV busbar arrangements requiring independent voltage monitoring relay functions, generation substations where loss-of-mains protection is a grid connection requirement, and MV reactive power compensation installations using capacitor banks that require dedicated overcurrent and unbalance protection independent of the feeder protection relay.
